Spotswood name 2018 Senior Captains
The 2018 football season is upon us, with the green and gold of Spotswood doubling its offering of community football in what is shaping up to be the most exciting season of football this proud club has seen.
The introduction of the WRFL Senior women’s team, now named the Spotswood Wolves, has given the club a whole new dimension and has expanded the following base of the club substantially. Meanwhile, the senior men’s team has also bolstered its list in the hope of diving deeper into the finals.
With an influx of new faces comes the challenge of finding the right people to lead the charge, and the club is very excited to announce that both the women’s and men’s teams have appointed their skippers for 2018.
For the Wolves, Haylea Cooney and Gilda Incigneri will be the inaugural captains of the Spotswood Football Club in the WRFL Senior Women’s competition. Ruth Ellen has also been selected as the team’s Vice Captain for the new season. After much deliberation, Coach Theo Theodorou selected the pair as co-captains due to their outstanding leadership on the training track, which has garnered a huge respect from the newly formed playing group.
“From day one, the girls (Haylea and Gilda) have shown they are dedicated to each and every member of the team,” Theodorou said.
“Both have trained hard over the summer, and have pushed their teammates to improve their fitness and skills every single night. I feel we have made the right choice with our captains, and with Ruth as Vice, our group has already gelled really well.”
For the Woodsmen, a powerhouse in the men’s competition for many years, the club will once again be led by inspirational skipper Murray Boyd for a fifth straight season.
No other player in the WRFL carries the amount of respect that Boyd brings to the club, with his leadership and playing skill also seeing him fly the flag as Interleague Captain in 2016.
“Murray is a true champion of the league, and continues to inspire his teammates on a weekly basis,” Spotswood List Manager Tony Walshe said.
“We have a lot of new faces to the club this year, and Murray has made their transition into the green and gold absolutely seamless. It does not take long for players to see why he has been our captain for so long, and we could not be happier to have him lead our club to (hopefully) a long and successful season.”
The club will officially unveil Cooney, Gilda and Boyd at the club’s season launches, which will be held at the Clubrooms on Thursday 12th April for the men & Wednesday 18th April for the women.
